There's been another #MadSquatchy sighting! Jeff snapped this photo on his delivery route just before the legendary Sasquatch disappeared into the lush green landscaping at the Savannah Center. The chef at Savannah Center is now serving Madisono's Gelato and Sorbet in the menu offerings. If you haven't been to this venue yet, you'll be amazed--not just by their excellent choice in frozen desserts, but because of their state-of-the-art technology and hospitality. It's a beautiful location for office parties and weddings!
There's a little game we like to play here at Madisono's called MadSqatchy Sighting. We have seen this particular sasquatch with pints of our gelato in many locations where Madisono's is sold. If you look carefully, you might also catch a glimpse of him in front of this Whole Foods Store in Rookwood, Cincinnati. Jeff, our delivery guy was luckily able to get him on film this time. Country Fresh Market is one of Cincinnati's foodie gems. The produce is always super fresh, they carry all kinds of international products, they have a HUGE (350+) selection of craft beers and wine and NOW they carry Madisono's Gelato and Sorbet pints. We installed the freezer last week and have already refilled it twice. Thank you to everyone who has purchased and enjoyed Madisono's. We hope to win over a few more fans with this great location. Did you try the Hokey Pokey flavor yet? Hello Columbus!
We are very pleased to be included in the Summer 2014 issue of Edible Columbus in their Cincinnati Day Trips feature! We have always loved the North Market and think our Findlay Market (the longest continuously operated market in the US!) in historic Over-The-Rhine is definitely worth a visit!

There are so many exciting food and creative ventures going on in Cincinnati! Gina Weathersby, creator of the local food community 513{eats} has definitely tapped into some of our best local flavor and shown it in the most beautiful photographs.
Do you know more than a sixth grader?

We shared our goal of creating a new seasonal flavor for Madisono's with the sixth graders at Kilgour Elementary Students in Mt. Lookout and in turn, they helped us create the gelato flavor "Triple Chocolate Dare".

This was an exciting project through a partnership made possible by a grant from Ohio's Straight A Fund, in which students are learning about math and science with a real life case study. Over ten weeks the students and I (Matt Madison) created a survey including questions about favorite flavors, fruits, and taste preferences of salty, sweet, or sour. The entire Kilgour K-6 student population participated in the research. Lead Math 6 Grade teacher Mrs. Stephanie Bisher then oversaw focus group meetings and taught students to compare ingredients by cost allocation.

Data showed the favorite was chocolate, and it was established as the flavor base.

I provided cost data for the top choice of add-in ingredients: brownies, cheesecake, Oreo cookies, and several others. The students made decisions based on gross profit margin, as well as considering allergens for each. It's been great to come into the classroom and show them a real life story problem. And one they've been so enthusiastic about!

I enjoyed teaching parts of the unit, and the student reaction confirmed the success of the partnership. I'd love to return with this project every year. I want the first graders to look forward to their own gelato project when they get old enough.

In the last phase of the project, the students brainstormed names for the new gelato. The favorites were "Choczilla", "Kilgour Chocolate Galore", and "Chocolate Cubed."

Called "Curricular Innovation" by Harvard University's School of Education, this experiential program is the first to be implemented in the K-8 classroom. "It's the first use of this problem solving approach in an elementary school. After we create a Harvard-style case study, we scale and duplicate the STEM based curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) to other schools," said Mary Welsh Schlueter, Chief Executive Officer for Partnership for Innovation in Education (PIE).

"deeper learning" required for new critical thinking guidelines in schools. It will help them now, and in their careers. Schlueter has been busy overseeing 18 schools who are participating in the grant.

The students will saw their research and marketing come to life in the Madisono's Gelato booth at the Kilgour Festival May 17, where a percentage of the gelato sales will return to the School. The new flavor will be available in retail stores across Cincinnati starting June 1.

We have been joining the folks at the Cincinnati Zoo for their Wild About Wine events for years now and still find lots of fun people to meet and share our gelato with. This year, we are going to be raffling off free tickets on our Facebook page to these very fun events. Each event offers great food from local restaurants and caterers, a walk around the zoo where you can pet the some of the animals they have on display with the trainers, and drink wine. And with tickets, it's all for free!

This year's winner of the contest was Jason Roberts and he brought some of his friends from work. There will be another event next month, so stay tuned, like our Facebook Page, and rub your rabbit's foot for luck!Margot Madison Creativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08503183001548514354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1083054297056168405.post-16571858121384428382014-03-31T14:53:00.004-04:002014-03-31T14:54:56.011-04:00The Open Door Diner in Altamont, IL

If you ever find yourself heading west from Cincinnati into Illinois, consider stopping for a rest in Altamont, Illinois. There is a little placed called the Open Door Diner and there you will not only find a delicious cinnamon bun for breakfast or chicken salad sandwich for lunch, you will also find Madisono's Gelato and Sorbet on their menu for dessert. :o) The empire expands...mwa-ha-ha-ha!
Being a science kid himself, Matt Madison is very pleased to be teaching the fun of science to some local sixth graders at Kilgour School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Together with Mary Schleuter, who developed the P.I.E. (Partnership in Innovative Education) program and the teachers at Kilgour, the children will be learning the business and science of making one of our favorite treats: gelato!
This recipe was inspired by my wife's favorite dessert growing up: vanilla ice cream with toasted flaked coconut and a drizzle of caramel on top. This flavor is available this Spring until May 1st.
Spring will be here soon, believe it or not. And we've got some delicious seasonal flavors that will make your mouth burst with joy.

Hokey Pokey is a flavor that has a fun history. We created this flavor for the Xavier Music Series when we wanted to make the musician from New Zealand feel a little closer to home. One of the most popular ice cream flavors in New Zealand is called the Hokey Pokey. So we made some of our own honeycomb toffee and blended it into our famously delicious Madagascar Vanilla. It was a big hit, so we thought we'd add it to our regular line of flavors. Insert happy dance.Margot Madison Creativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08503183001548514354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1083054297056168405.post-31739461748234641532014-02-17T09:00:00.000-05:002014-02-17T16:45:48.984-05:00All the buzz is about Madisono's New Flavor: Espresso Bean!

We are very buzzed to tell you about one of our newest flavors of Madisono's Gelato! It started with a smooth espresso gelato and because we were so pumped up, we threw in some chocolate covered espresso beans for crunch. If you think that sounds good (and trust us, it is!) try some on a dark chocolate brownie...divine!Margot Madison Creativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08503183001548514354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1083054297056168405.post-61222188434788291662014-01-22T14:19:00.000-05:002014-01-22T14:19:25.151-05:00Alphonso Mango in Madisono's Sorbet

Why do we use Alphonso Mangoes in our Madisono's Mango Sorbet? Alphonso mangoes are imported from India and are something of a national obsession. They deliver the sweetest, richest mango flavor to our sorbet and help us deliver delicious flavor to you. Now, how about a smoothie? ;o)Margot Madison Creativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08503183001548514354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1083054297056168405.post-21229717962567917392014-01-16T08:53:00.000-05:002014-01-16T08:53:06.082-05:00Chocolate Malt Gelato at the Xavier University Music Series this Sunday

It may be -4 degrees outside in Cincinnati, but the Madisono's Gelato world is far from frigid. We thought a little citrus might be just the thing to remind us that spring will arrive, eventually.

Here is a delicious recipe from The Grand Surprise! for Lemon Cream Cheese Croissants. Doesn't it look delicious? How about a few for a luncheon or Sunday brunch with a dainty scoop of deliciously floral Madisono's Honey Lavender Gelato on the side? Looking for some simple but delicious desserts to serve your special dinner guests? Warm, soft, chocolate cake is a delicious, now classic, dessert created by Jean Georges Vongerichten and printed in his cookbook Jean Georges: Cooking at Home with a Four Star Chef. Pair it with some Madisono's Peppermint Stick or Salted Caramel gelato and you've hit the sweet spot for dessert.

You can prepare these and refrigerate several hours before and cook at the last minute since they have a short baking time.

WARM, SOFT CHOCOLATE CAKE
1/2 Cup (1 stick) butter, plus some for buttering molds
4 ounces bitter or semi-sweet chocolate
2 eggs
2 egg yolks
1/4 Cup sugar
2 tsp flour plus more for dusting

In a double boiler over simmering water, melt butter an chocolate together. While that's heating, beat together eggs, yolks and sugar with the whisk attachment for the mixeruntil light in color and thick. Slowly stir in warm chocolate mixture into egg mixture. Quickly beat in flour until just combined. Butter and lightly flour four 4 oz molds, custard cups or ramekins. Tap out excess flour, then butter and flour them again. Divide the batter among the molds. Desserts can be covered and refrigerated at this point for several hours. Bring them back to room temperature before baking. Preheat oven to 450ºF. Bake molds on a tray for 6 to seven minutes. Center will be soft but sides should show clean when a toothpick or knife inserted comes out clean. Place a dessert plate on toop of the mold and turn both plate and mold over to invert. Let mold set for 10 seconds and lift off plate. Cake will slump on the plate. Place a scoop of gelato on the side and serve immediately.Margot Madison Creativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08503183001548514354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1083054297056168405.post-77911946022394701502013-12-12T09:00:00.000-05:002013-12-13T08:36:46.541-05:00A little bit about Lemon Basil Sorbet

Fresh basil leaves, lemon rind and icy tart flavors are what make this sorbet flavor taste frigging good. But what makes it even better, is that it is so beloved by those who have certian dietary restrictions. It's vegan. And it is gluten free. And nut free. And egg free. And alcohol free. One of Cincinnati's many historical gems is Memorial Hall, Over-The-Rhine Cincinnati. We've enjoyed going to the Music Now Festival for the past several years, which takes place there. It's a beautiful building with all the details of fine craftsmanship that are tough to find these days.

Madisono's is very, very pleased to partner with Memorial Hall as a preferred vendor. We are stoked to bring our creative expressions of gelato to the music events (MadMen themed gelato? Oh yes.) and also to bring fun and flavor to the weddings and parties that will be booking in 2014.Margot Madison Creativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08503183001548514354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1083054297056168405.post-81178355708980905002013-07-18T12:35:00.002-04:002013-07-18T12:35:10.183-04:00A special fundraiser for the Evan's Family

A few weeks ago, I (Matt Madison) was coming home from the pool after a quick evening swim and happened to become part of a tragic event in Cincinnati. The owner of the Cosmic Pizza restaurant had been shot and was lying in the neighbor's yard. My wife had been the first to drive by and was frantically speaking to the 911 operator to get help. I went to Rich Evan's side and knelt down next to him and grabbed his hand. I encouraged him to hang on until help came and prayed for him but within a few minutes, he had died. I've never had the privilege of accompanying someone as they took their last breaths of life, but I can tell you that it is something I will never forget.

As the evening played out, I saw the entirety of the tragedy. Rich, who I'd just spoken with that week, had left behind a wife who speaks little English and three bright young children. He'd taken care of their every need up until the moment of his passing, and now they were left with no family to help them through the next awful steps of their life. Since then, we've been tightly involved with Ao (his wife) and her children and have seen an incredible outpouring of support. Friends have stopped by every day to check on them, make phone calls, sort through bills, and more. So many have donated money to the website so that the family can make it through the next months without financial worries and it is incredible to see such loving generosity. I feel especially close to this tragedy, not only because I was there the night Rich died, but because I am an entrepreneur who wants to support his growing family with my products and hard work. I feel like I can't do enough to help them out. I know many of you feel the same way.

This Sunday, we will be selling cups of Madisono's gelato in front of Madison's Market at Findlay Market. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Evans family. We thank you for the support you have already shown, and hope you will enjoy a cup of gelato knowing that it will continue to help a family in great need.Margot Madison Creativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08503183001548514354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1083054297056168405.post-67767568970956740332013-06-14T11:06:00.001-04:002013-06-14T11:06:46.621-04:00Chicago's Ben Roche is making artesian gelato too!

He uses liquid nitrogen to cool the gelato quickly, make the smallest ice crystals possible. Although the liquid nitrogen is pretty fun to play with, we prefer the consistency of our batch freezer!
The link includes some delicious topping ideas and we are quite intrigued by the tomato gelato flavor idea. Hmmmmm......
We especially love listening to the internet station SomaFM set to Digitalis and Indie Pop Rocks genres.

You can see why we are VERY excited to be a part of the MidPoint Indie Summer going happening on Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati Friday nights from 8 until 11. Madisono's will be enjoying the great music with you and keeping you cool and refreshed with Tartufo, Mad*Pops, Gelato (lower in fat than ice cream!) and Sorbet (vegan and dairy free).

This Friday will be featuring The Pomegranates, The Yugos will be releasing their CD, and the Cincinnati band The Never Setting Suns.

We are very happy to have Katie the Intern helping us out with production this summer. Katie is from Antioch College in Yellow Springs and has done very well in her 'Trial by Fire' job. We've been super busy preparing 4 ounce cups of gelato for Dorothy Lane stores in addition to our regular gelato and sorbet production. She has not yet seen MadSquatchy but is on the look-out. Glen Helen is reportedly a very squatchy area...Margot Madison Creativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08503183001548514354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1083054297056168405.post-30185256791348261922013-05-15T12:49:00.002-04:002013-05-15T12:49:55.841-04:00Caramel with Sea Salt: The real story about why it's not Burnt Sugar and Star Anise

The creative process is always at work, here at Madisono's. We love trying out new and different flavor combinations and testing them out on our *usually grateful* family and friends. Sometimes we start with one flavor combination and end up with a completely different one. Such is the case with one of our most beloved flavors, Caramel and Sea Salt.
Would you believe that this flavor actually started as burnt
sugar with star anise? After some initial experimentation, Matt decided to make
some caramel from the burnt sugar by adding cream to the hot mix. After the
steam cleared, he poured the caramel ribbons into the vanilla base and added the sea
salt to enhance the buttery flavors. After his first flavor tester (his
mother-in-law) called and begged for more after trying the one pint, he figured
he was on to something. Conversely, his kids wouldn’t touch the star anise
version, so that was shelved for further exporation.
